THE NAME OF THE LORD

 

(Position, honor, authority, character, renown, fame)

 

In the Bible, when a person's character or position changed, often the name was also changed. That's because each name has significance, reflecting the character and position of the person. So, too, God's names reflect His character (Holy) and position (Most High). Let's live, pray and do all we do in a manner worthy of His name. There is great power and authority in His name, which we have been given to use. As we study the following scriptures, may God anoint His word to us so that His name will have even more meaning and use in our lives.

 

God's name reveals who He is…

Who He is to us: Jeremiah 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell in safety: and this is his name by which he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

 

Who He is to us: Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.  Father, Jehovah ________, El Shaddai, Redeemer,

 

Who He is to us: Revelation 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 16 And he has on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

 

The character His name reveals is worthy of our trust…

Trust: Matthew 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he shall send forth justice to victory. 21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

 

Trust: John 2:23. Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

 

Trust: John 3:18 He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

 

Trust: John 20:31 But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life through his name.

 

Trust: 1 John 3:23. And this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

 

Trust: 1 John 5:13 These things have I written to you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God.

 

As well as a name to trust, our identity comes from His name because we are His!

Trust, Identification: Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent you, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

 

Trust, Identification: Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whoever believes in him shall receive remission of sins. 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they requested him to tarry certain days.

 

Trust, Identification, Authority: John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

 

Identification: Acts 15:17 That the rest of men may seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, says the Lord, who does all these things.

 

Identification: Isaiah 43:6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; 7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; verily, I have made him.

 

Identification: Isaiah 54:5 For your Maker is your husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and your Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

 

Identification: Amos 9:12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the nations, who are called by my name, says the LORD that does this.

 

Identification: Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

 

Identification: Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

 

Identification: Ephesians 3:14. For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

 

Identification: Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

 

We are told to pray in the name of Jesus because He paved the way for us to be able to pray to the Father directly, plus it gives us the authority to do so…

Prayer: Genesis 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

 

Prayer: Genesis 12:8 And he removed from there to a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he erected an altar to the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

 

Prayer: 1 Kings 18:24 And call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answers by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, it is well spoken.

 

Prayer: Isaiah 12:4. And in that day shall you say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

 

Prayer: Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

 

Prayer: John 14:13 And whatever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

 

Prayer: John 16:23. And in that day you shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say to you, whatever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full. 26 At that day you shall ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you:

 

Just the sound of His name invokes thanks, praise and worship for He is worthy…

Worship: Exodus 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain. 24 An altar of earth you shall make to me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings, and your peace offerings, your sheep, and your oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come to you, and I will bless you.

 

Worship: 2 Samuel 7:26 And let your name be magnified forever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of your servant David be established before you. [Imagine, we can magnify the name of God!]

 

Worship: Leviticus 19:12 And you shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

 

Worship: Nehemiah 9:5 Then the Levites aid, Stand up and bless the LORD your God forever and ever: and blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

 

Worship: Psalms 66:4 All the earth shall worship you, and shall sing to you; they shall sing to your name. Selah.

 

Worship: Psalms 68:4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rides upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.

 

Worship: Psalms 89:16 In your name shall they rejoice all the day: and in your righteousness shall they be exalted.

 

Worship: Psalms 99:3 Let them praise your great and terrible name; for it is holy.

 

Worship: Psalms 102:15 So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth your glory.

 

Worship: Psalms 113:3 From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same the LORD'S name is to be praised.

 

Worship: Malachi 1:11 For from the rising of the sun even to the setting of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. 14 But cursed be the deceiver, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name is terrible among the nations.

 

Worship: Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

 

Worship: Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

 

Worship: Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you only are holy: for all nations shall come and worship before you; for your judgments are revealed.

 

We have authority and power to conduct kingdom business in His name…

Authority: Luke 10:17. And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us through your name. 18 And he said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 However in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

 

Authority: John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.

 

Authority: 1 Corinthians 1:10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

 

Authority: Ephesians 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

 

Authority: Philippians 2:9 Therefore God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

 

Authority: 2 Thessalonians 3:6. Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother that walks disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received from us.

 

Authority, Ministry, Identification: Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority is given to me in heaven and upon earth. 19 Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.

 

Authority, Ministry: Mark 9:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out demons in your name, and he follows not us: and we forbid him, because he follows not us. 39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man who shall do a miracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is for us.

 

Authority, Ministry: Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak in new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

 

Authority, Ministry: Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 16 And his name through faith in his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know: yea, the faith which is by him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

 

Authority, Ministry: Acts 4:7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have you done this? 10 Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him does this man stand here before you in good health. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we must be saved. 30 By stretching forth your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of your holy child Jesus. [There are healing, salvation, and miracles in the name of Jesus.]

 

Authority, Ministry: Acts 16:18 And this she did many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

 

Ministry: Numbers 6:27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them. [The name of the Lord blesses us. This was part of the priest’s blessing and ministry was part of his ministry.]

 

Ministry: Micah 5:4 And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great to the ends of the earth.

 

Ministry: Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? And in your name have cast out demons? And in your name done many wonderful works?

 

Ministry: Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

 

Ministry: Romans 9:17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

 

Anointing: Song of Solomon 1:3 Because of the savor of Your good ointments Your name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love you. [The bridegroom in Song of Solomon is a picture of Jesus.]

 

There is protection in the name of Jesus…

Refuge: Proverbs 18:10. The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe.

 

Refuge: John 17:6. I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave to me out of the world: yours they were, and you gave them to me; and they have kept your word. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name: those that you gave to me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
